There is a long history in classical music of combining good drink, good friends, and great music. PBF revives the tradition with the 2nd annual Bach and Beer by pairing local brews from Maine brewers with short musical interludes by PBF artists, all at one of Portland’s most picturesque locations on Casco Bay.
Entrance is free. Beer and food are available for purchase.
History of Bach and Beer
Much of J.S. Bach’s secular music, including the famous Coffee Cantata, was premiered at Zimmermannsche Kaffeehaus, or Zimmerman’s Coffee Shop, by the Collegium Musicum, then under Bach’s direction. Zimmermannsche Kaffeehaus was the meeting place in Leipzig for the middle class. While women were forbidden from frequenting coffee shops, they were allowed to attend these public concerts. As a result, performances at the Kaffeehaus were opportunities for the opposite sexes to meet and mingle.
